Awhhhhh the 80's

You know you were there at some point in your life! Maybe you had poofy bangs and loved them, maybe you were just in diapers...or both. Whatever the case, I though we all could use a trip down memory lane, via a June 1985 issue of House Beautiful.

They say you can't know where you're going, until you know where you've been :) With that said, how did you feel about decor in the 80's?...what where your likes and dislikes, if any?

Well, there was a lot of bad design (and clothing) in the 80s. That said, I still am mesmerized by the decor of New York Nouvelle Society of the 80s- so over the top!

Oh how I desperately wanted a Patrick Nagel print for my bedroom! I had forgotten all out Nagel. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Thankfully I was reading the The Face and ID - so the aesthetic was a cocktail of club-kid meets industrial modern meets Hollywood glam! I loved the 80s - so much more about creativity than cost.

Fun post! I really like the yellow room here, center, with brass (?) coffee table.

In terms of the 80s in general, I liked the rich color, and I like how Domino just brought back restrained use of chintz in the August issue, but I'm not a fan of ruffles.

Yes, I agree with you Courtney, may we never ruffle anything again! Glad you liked this post!

Yes, you're right House of Beauty and Culture...those times where all about pushing the envelope no matter how extreme...I wish I could get my hands on some old ID mags, so fun! Thanks for the comment :)

OH my gosh, Patrick Nagel - that makes "Rio" go through my head! The room with the striped sofa and the red table is like an 80's outfit turned into a room - the one that Beverly D'Angelo was wearing after the Milan shopping trip in European Vacation - the pointy table represents the massive shoulder pads!

I can't stand the Kountry Kraftsy curtains, stencils, et. al., and a lot of the shapes and brass and glass make me cringe, but I do miss some of the overt Trump-ish obnoxious opulence and the bold colors. I am longing to watch the shopping scene in Valley Girl because of this post - it is such a fun one!

OMG! I was one of those too short bangs girls. I am trying to forget the eightes, well... except for Michael Taylor, David Hicks, Mark Hampton,. On the other hand, maybe not so bad!

I'm glad I was more worried about my hair then decor! I'm sure I'll think the same of my 07 stuff in 20 years lol

Those cabinets in the second room, everyone had those! And the first room looks like an office. The third is just b a d!

Nagel! Oh dear.

Do you think all of us will groan at our versions of Nagel (the Target-bought serious black & white fake-fancy photos... or the hipster equivalents: the "Keep Calm and Carry On" or "Like for Ever" posters? Makes you NOT want to jump on a trend, huh? :)

My mom had a similar horrible brass coffee table. And I lived to tell.

Yes, indeed Decorno...I hate to say it but with any trend there will be a little remorse years later. But, probably not to the degree that was done during the 80s :)

Thanks for the comment!

I know...Joni! I think I could live with the first two scenes if I had to, but that third one would cause me to have a nervous breakdown...thanks for the comment.

Kitchens were the worst! It was either that pink/white frosted maple or oak (take your pick) raised panel doors or brown oak or gray laminate...or glossy white. These are cabinet doors I'm talking about. And, zero inspiration in the design area too...just runs of cabinets. It hurts to remember!

Fun thread!
