is all I've wanted for my bedroom. I would build an alcove just for the purpose of having a cozy spot for my bed. I don't know why this really appeals to me, maybe it's some link to my childhood...the canopy bed I had most of my life, all those huts made of boxes, and just the feeling of having a private spot (I sound like I grew up with 10 siblings instead of 2). Either way, anyone lucky enough to do so, should try this...so, here's a little inspiration for you!

I have always thought the bed niche was a design challenge--thanks for the inspiration!
I love the idea of this Kate! Kind of cozy. Albert Hadley did this with a daybed/sofa in his apt. and it looked great!
Recently I toured an historic home that had been restored for a family with two young girls. In their shared bedroom, they turned the low-ceilinged closet into a "reading nook" and fitted it with piles of pillows in "girly" fabrics, two small reading lamps, handmade artwork on the walls, and a banner of fabric triangle flags hanging from the corners of the "room" to the center of the ceiling. It looked like the most magical space ever. I know what you mean about craving a "niche" to hide away!
those topn two are such favorites of mine :)
Really good post, love the photographs & the idea of a bedroom niche.
i'm moving soon and have been searching like mad for ideas for my new home!! all your pictures were so helpful. thanks!!
Glad you liked this brilliant asylum!
Yes definately cozy Jennifer! I think I do recall the Albert Hadley daybed...I will have to look for that image and add it, thanks for reminding me :)
I love those top two too Courtney...okay that was a bit of tongue twister. Thanks for the comment :)

Thanks so much Robyn!
I really dig the whole niche thing and the coziness it affords! Great post!
Thanks so much Anne!
I love that first shot from domino 3/06. I didn't subscribe to domino then and i've never seen that shot. I love the color...not too sweet but not punky, just cool. I love that mustardy gold color on her skirt with it too...i wonder if she intended to complement it for the shoot...
I remember seeing the Pottery Barn design director's home once in a magazine. She had a niche carved out adjacent to her kitchen in which she placed a full sized bed.
The nook was large enough to hold the entire bed and have heaps of pillows, perfect for reading with her children or taking a nap. It was just adorable.
Your post brought back all of the thoughts of her inspiring home.
i like this!!!! i'm not fortunate to have this tho but i admire it :(
That is a great photo isn't it Emily! I was just talking about this cover the other day and was saying the same thing, that I think the skirt was planned to go with the room :) Thanks for stopping by my blog!

This is so perfect for little girls! A niche, with smaller niches to keep stuff handy! And you get the feeling of coziness as you sleep!
I agree, great post. I've always wanted a space like that for my bedroom too. That image from Domino is fab!
I love the concept of sleeping niches...very cozy. Great pictures on this post.
